About the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time is rain chains. When I built my house I put stone columns between each garage door. They are really cool and add a very nice touch of character to the front of the house. When I installed gutters I did not want to cover these columns up with down spouts. A great alternative I found was to use rain chains. They have gotten popular in the last couple of years and I am starting to see them more and more.
Now I don’t understand the science behind how they work, but they do work. I think it has to do with the science of liquid surface tension and Discovery Channel kind of science that’s beyond my comprehension, but the final effect is a gentle and soothing stream of water that flows all the way to the ground. One caveat that I will mention is that during a hard driving and windy rain, the water will start to blow off the chains and it does get a little messy, but during a gentle, rock-you-to-sleep rain they work perfect, even if it’s a gully washer.
The ones I bought are real copper and after a few months they started to get a nice weathered look to them. I bought mine on Amazon. I ordered them one day and got them the next. Installation was very easy. I had to remove a couple of links in the chains to get them sized up correctly for my application, but within an hour they were up and ready for mother nature. They were certainly easier and quicker to install than downspouts! If you have ever wondered about them and wanted to see how they work then take a look at my video below. I have also included a product link so you can see exactly what I used. I think you will like them. They are soothing and fun to watch…….
